  • With recent heather fires in Girlsta and Sandness, Jamie Halcrow Johnston has commented that it is important to heed the warnings of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and ensure that all efforts are made to prevent wildfires starting in the first place.

  • So far there is no indication that any human in Shetland has caught the H5N1 avian flu virus, despite thousands of gannets and hundreds of bonxies being found dead or dying, epecially in 2022.

  • Following a ministerial statement on migration in the House of Commons, Alistair Carmichael spoke against the UK government’s cuts to visas for health and social care workers and others.

  • One of the coastguard helicopters based at Sumburgh was tasked twice. This was first to a diving support vessel in the East Shetland Basin to take a crewman in need of medical attention to Sumburgh and the other was for an NHS patient transfer from Rousey to Aberdeen.

  • NHS Grampian has said that it hopes that all appointments for breast cancer will be offered by NHS Grampian from June, but that it would keep the situation under review until a new specialty doctor arrives and better use is made of advanced nurse practitioners. NHS Grampian provides breast cancer services to NHS Shetland.

  • The 156 metre diving support vessel Deep Explorer is finally in the Rosebank field, 85 nautical miles west-north-west of Unst.

  • It looks as if the new Carer Support Payment will not be extended to Shetland until November.
